A “Special” Special Olympics

Usually in May, student athletes complete track & field activities at Gunn High School to complete the Special Olympics medal. Of course this wasn’t possible under the current shelter-in-place order. That didn’t slow anyone down, though! Our wonderful APE teacher Angel Sheridan and her support team came up with a virtual Special Olympics event. Students watched videos about the three disciplines to be completed at home: distance running, long jump and throw. They then completed the activities in their backyards or around their neighborhoods, with family members as their coaches and competitors. Doing the sports activities together was great fun for families. The videos and photos that families recorded were sent in to Angel, and students who completed the activities will attend a virtual awards ceremony on June 4th. Congratulations to our young athletes!
